The Town of Burns Tax Collector is responsible for receiving and recording all property tax payments for properties within the Town. Acting as an agent for both the Town of Burns and Allegany County, the Tax Collector ensures that property tax revenues are collected efficiently, accurately, and in accordance with New York State Real Property Tax Law.

The office works to provide clear and courteous service to all residents, answering questions about current tax bills, payment methods, and deadlines. Maintaining detailed records of all collections and disbursements, the Tax Collector plays an essential role in the financial management and transparency of town operations.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Collecting town and county property taxes as authorized by New York State law

• Issuing tax bills and receipts for all collected payments

• Maintaining accurate records of collections and deposits

• Disbursing collected funds to the appropriate town, county, and school district accounts

• Responding to taxpayer inquiries about billing, receipts, and payment status

• Coordinating with the Allegany County Treasurer’s Office for delinquent tax processing after the collection period closes

Payment Information

• Tax bills are mailed annually, typically in January.

• Payments may be made by mail, in person, or via the drop box (if available).

• The Tax Collector can only accept payments during the designated collection period listed on your bill.

• Partial payments and late payments may be subject to penalties as required by law.

• After the collection period ends, unpaid taxes are turned over to the Allegany County Treasurer for collection.
